+que_toys: chris garbutt

Raised by wild Guinea Pigs in the jungles of West Yorkshire, Chris Garbutt developed the uncanny ability to emit funny pictures with his mind. He now woks out of a giant blue airship hovering two miles above central London and only ever comes to the Earth’s surface to buy biscuits and cakes.

H: Who and what inspires you? why?
Cartoons, books, films, TV, music, places, pretty much anything really. I like to keep my eyes and ears open and consume all there is on offer.

How would you define your style?
Visual phooey.

And artists I'm into at the moment Alberto Mielgo, Edgardo Carosia, Marc Boutavant, Matt Pattison, Mique Moriuchi, Tadahiro Uesugi, Sergio Aragones, Leo Baxendale, Bill Wray, Lou Romano, Mary Blair, Jean-Jaques Sempe, Ryohei Yanagihara, Osamu Tezuka, Harvey Kurtzman, Jim Flora, Chris Reccardi, Rex Hackelberg, Ed Benedict, Tom Oreb, Charlie Harper, Gene Deitch, Miroslav Sasek and John Kricfalusi.

What are you working on at the moment?
I work at the Cartoon Network in London at their new development studio. So that involves writing, storyboarding and designing new TV shows ready to be pitched and hopefully get picked up for series. I'm also doing various jobs for my illustration agent.

Dibujos animados, libros, películas, TV, música, lugares… muchas cosas en realidad. Me gusta tener mis ojos y oídos bien abiertos para poder captar todo lo que se me ofrezca.

¿En qué está trabajando ahora mismo?
Estoy trabajando en ‘Cartoon Network’ en Londres y en su nuevo estudio de desarrollo. Eso supone escribir, hacer ‘storyboards’, diseñar nuevos programas de televisión que esperamos que se conviertan en series. Además, también realizo varios trabajos de ilustración para mi agente.
