+que_toys: tom hänni

Tom Hänni. I was born and raised in Bern/Switzerland. After regular school i attended the college to become a teacher. Along the way i always loved to draw (mostly characters). That’s why i started a one-year preparation course for art and design in Bern after I got my certification. From 2001 to 2005 i studied “visual communication” at the highschool for art in Bern. My diploma work called “Letters for my mom” was a full animated musicvideo which was shown on tv and at different animation-festivals around the world. After graduation i established together with friends the graphic design studio “pixelfarm”. Since then i’m working on a wide field of different projects.

H: How long have you been illustrating, how'd you get into it?
Since i’m a child. I always loved to draw and invent new characters.

Who and what inspires you? why?
I was pretty much inspired by the (most japanese) tv cartoon series when i was a child.
Till now i’m a lot influenced from japanese mangas, videogames and animes. I guess it’s because of their strong addiction to characters.

Any interesting artist that you can tell us about?
Well, there are so many to mention... Akira Toriyama, creator of Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball… is one of the greatest artist for me. Then further I absolutely love the illustration work of Kirsten Ulve.

What are you working on at the moment?
Right now i’m working in Zurich on a serie of tv-commercial spots for the “Billag” company for which i designed all the characters. Now i’m generally animate them... ;)
