H: First of all, can you please introduce yourself to the Le Toy audience?

Hello, I’m Mark James, a graphic artist, designer, illustrator, based in London. I’ve created many things in my time, but the most successful of all was an invention of mine they call CardBoy!

How would you define your style and approach to your work?

Eclectic, it's changing all the time. I try and do as many diverse projects as I can, from toys to furniture, videos, packaging. I like the idea of totally new challenges, doing something completely different from the last project.

Who and what inspires you? why?

There’s too much, everything, it could be a discarded box or a building. I’ve designed so many different things, furniture, toys, videos, art. I like to look at each piece of work as an individual project.

How long have you been into paper toys and what got you started? Why 'paper toys'?

I wouldn’t say I’m into paper toys really, CardBoy is a box with a vinyl body. I don’t really get that excited about paper figures, it’s more about packaging and design. I create a lot of packaging, and I always try and do something different, I like the idea of packaging being more than a disposable wrap, I want to utilize and make it interesting.

What do you think of the ' designer toy ' scene today?

To be honest I don’t think about it that much, it all falls into creative design and art for me. I don’t see a difference between a vinyl figure and a great piece of art or a well designed book. It’s all creative product. People have different tastes, that’s what makes the world go round!

Who are your favorite Toy Designers at the moment?

Michael Lau, Kaws, James Jarvis, and of course Pete Fowler, are all consistently good. They’ve been there from the beginning, you know the next piece will be as good as or better than the last.

What sets you apart from other artists who are trying to do similar stuff to yours?

Are there other artists try to do similar stuff? Give me their names. I like to think my work is always well thought out, I wouldn’t just produce the next figure in a different colour way, each one has to be a new concept. Even with CardBoy, it’s the same principle, but a whole new package each time.

Your work spans many different mediums, are you very open to experimentation?

Totally, that’s what makes it exciting, each project can be so different. I do a lot of work for music industry, sleeve art, etc. which is always changing because each one is a new concept. But my personal projects vary too, I like to think of there being a light and a dark side, it depends on what mood I'm in. CardBoy has his cute qualities, but there's a dark undercurrent going on.

What´s your favourite piece of technology?

My Apple Mac, it has to be, we all know why, they’re the best.

Tell us about your plans for the next months, what will you be up to?

I’ve got a new print being released through Scrawl Collective, it’s a concept piece called Another Soldier. Then I hopefully start work on a solo exhibition. I’m also working on a book, which will feature some new sculptures I’ve been working on for the last few months. Then there’s a short film I’ve been trying to get underway, finding time, money and crew is a bit of a nightmare, but it will happen before I die.

¿Cómo empezaste a diseñar ‘paper toys’ y cuánto tiempo llevas?

Sinceramente, no pienso demasiado.
