Ayako Takagi was born in Japan. Se grew up in a creative environment, her parents work are jewelry artists, and she enjoyed watching things being produced. After finishing highschool in Japan, she went to London to study art at Camberwell College of Arts. She has just come back to Japan. Ayako`s influences include Archer Prewitt, Jim Woodring, Sigeru Mizuki, Doraemon…Takagi tries to create comic books, full of pictures without words, that enable people to use their own imagination. Ayako has finally made some 3d figures of some of her creations: Uamou, Katz and Beer.

H: Hi Ayako, tell us a little about yourself, can you please introduce yourself to the Le Toy audience?

Hola! My name is Ayako, creator of Uamou character. I was born and grew up in Tokyo. I studied art and design at technical high school in Japan. After I graduated high school I went to London to study art in university. I’ve actually just come back to Japan.

H: How would you define your style?

I dont use many colors on my illustration, I like something dark andi solation in the image. Making my image, I use computer just as tools. I like drawing and making things by my hand.

H: Who and what inspires you? why?

I can be inspired by anything from everyday my life… My hobby is collecting character figures and toys. Also I like watching animation and comic book, so I think these things probably had a strong impact on my inspirations.

H: What were your favourite cartoons when you were kid?

Draemon. When I went to Barcelona two years ago I watched Draemon on TV. I was really surprised that he speaking spanish!

H: When did you start creating the 'Uamou' character? Who is 'Katz and Beer'?

In my primary school days Uamou was born from doodling during lessons on my textbook. His name is based on the pronunciation of the Chinese word for devil, I asked my Chinese friends what devil was in Chinese, the answer was similar sounding to Uamou and I liked the pronunciation so much I decided on this name. I have been making comic book ‘Uamou From Another Planet’, Uamou is cute little alien who explores the galaxy and befriends a ghost. The comic is no words, it’s all about telling a story through pictures alone. I want people imagine their own imagination and create their own world.

I created Katz and Beer (cat and bear in German) first for an oil painting I did for the 100 View of Tokyo London exhibition at the Marunouchi building in Tokyo 2004. I made an animation and picture book called “Where is My Heart ?”which features Katz and Beer for my final degree project at Camberwell College of Arts.

H: What do you feel are the benefits and downfalls (if any) of working for yourself?

I feel very lucky that I get to do creative things for a living. I like working on my own, but this is sometime really difficult for me… because I am not a business person.

H: What do you think of the ' designer toy ' scene today?

I feel The designer toy scene in UK grows bigger, but i still think the biggest toy market is Japan.. because Japanese people are spend a lot of money for the crazy stuff including me

H: Who are your favorite Toy Designers at the moment ? Which is your favorite toy ?

I really like toys from Presspop, Critter box and Amos. my favorite toys are. . Giant pupshaw and Frank and pupshaw (Jim woodring), Sof'Boy, Quimby the Mouse (Chris Ware), Martin and Zombies (James Jarvis), Smoking Cat (Kaz), Dunces and Dumb Luck Japan (Garybaseman), Lapin (Mr Clement), Hot Dog Man and Kebab Twins (Will Sweeney), Blitz and KAWS COMPANION.......

H: What's getting you all excited at the moment?

New Uamou figures has just arrived at my house, and the Uamou online store will launch this month!

H: What are you working on at the moment? Next future for Ayako consists of…

I’d like to make more comics and animations. I’m also getting into painting for my solo exhibition.

H: Hola Ayako, ¿ puedes presentarte a los lectores de Letoy y contarnos algo acerca de ti?

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Ayako, creadora del personaje Uamou. Soy de Tokyo y allí estudié arte y diseño. Después de graduarme me fui a Londres y estudié arte en la universidad. Acabo de regresar a Japón.

H: ¿Cómo definirías tu estilo?

No utilizo mucha variedad de colores en mi trabajo. Me gusta las imágenes oscuras y, un tanto desoladoras. A la hora de crear utilizo el ordenador, sólo como una herramienta. Me gusta dibujar y hacer cosas a mano.

H: ¿Quién y qué te inspira? ¿Por qué?

Me inspira cualquier cosa del entorno cotidiano… Uno de mis aficiones es coleccionar personajes, toys, figuras, … También me gusta los comics y las animaciones así que supongo que todo esto es una fuerte fuente de inspiración.

H: ¿Cuáles eran tus dibujos animados preferidos cuando eras pequeña?

Draemon. Cuando visité Barcelona hace dos años vi Draemon en la TV. Me sorprendió verlos hablar en español.

H: ¿Cuándo creaste el personaje de Uamou? ¿Quién es ‘Katz and Beer’?

Lo cree en la escuela primaria. Surgió al hacer garabatos en los libros en las horas de clase. Su nombre está basado en la pronunciación la palabra china para demonio. Pregunté a mis amigos chinos como se decía demonio en chino, el sonido era parecido a la palabra Uamou y me gusto como quedaba, por eso le puse ese nombre. He hecho un cómic sobre el personaje de Uamou llamado ‘Uamou from Another Planet’ donde Uamou es un pequeño y mono alien que explora el universo con su amigo: el fantasma. No ha texto en el cómic, las propias ilustraciones y dibujos cuentan la historia. Quiero que la gente utilice su propia imaginación y cree su particular mundo.

Los personajes de ‘ Katz and Beer’ (gato y perro en Alemán) fueron creados en principio para una pintura al óleo. La hice para la exposición ‘The 100 View of Tokyo London ' en el edificio Marunouchi en el 2004 en Tokyo. He hecho también una animación y un libro de ilustraciones llamado ‘Where is my Heart?’ que tiene como protagonistas a Katz y Beer. Esto formaba parte de mi proyecto de final de estudios de arte en el ‘Camberwell College of Arts’ de Londres.

H: ¿Cuáles crees que son las ventajas y desventajas (si los hay) de trabajar por ti misma?

Me siento afortunada y me gusta trabajar por mi cuenta aunque a veces me resulta complicado… no sé mucho de la parte de negocios y comercial…

H: ¿Qué piensas de la escena de los ‘designer toys’ hoy en día?

La escena de toys en UK está creciendo últimamente… pero todavía es mucho más grande en Japón ya que ellos se gastan mucho dinero en todo eso… incluyéndome a mí.

H: ¿Cuál es tu diseñador de toys preferido? ¿Y tu toy preferido?

Realmente me gustan los toys de Presspop, Critterbox y Amos. Acaban de llegar nuevas figuras de Uamou y la tienda on-line por fin estará lista este mes.

H: ¿En qué estás trabajando ahora mismo? El futuro de Ayako consiste en…

Me gustaría hacer más comics y animaciones. Estoy trabajando en pinturas para una exposición sobre mi trabajo.
